While right now our biggest challenge is potty training, I have been wondering lately what it will be like raising a girl. As most of you know, we wanted a girl when I was pregnant with Jena. Since both Roger and I have older brothers (and the scars that go with that) we thought a girl first would be better for our future children. We will let you know how that works out. But I guess you don't think about actually raising a girl until you have one. There is so much to think about, from what they wear to what they watch on TV. I try so hard to show her good female role models, but that is hard when the media and TV are full of so many bad ones. Even today at the bookstore, I noticed far more books about boys than girls.
So I will tell her, like my mom told me, she can do anything. The world is a different place from when I was her age, but so many things are still the same. There is a woman running for president this year. It has been 24 years since a woman was on the ticket for a major party. I remember when it happened last, I was 10. I was surprised in the years to follow that it was not considered again. Lets hope it is not another 24 years before we see more women on the main stage of politics. I'd like to tell her that she could be president and have her believe it.
